  1. Microsoft Unveils New Version of Flight Simulator and Announces 
  2. Space Simulator

  6.      CHICAGO - June 3, 1993 - Microsoft Corporation today announced the 
  7. future availability of four new simulation products from the entertainment
  8. product unit: the much-anticipated Microsoft* Flight Simulator* version 5.0
  9. for the IBM* PC and compatible computers; two scenery enhancement products,
  10. Microsoft New York and Microsoft Paris, for use with Microsoft Flight
  11. Simulator 5.0; and Microsoft Space Simulator, the ultimate in spaceflight 
  12. and exploration.  With the new version of Flight Simulator, the best-
  13. selling flight simulation software of all time, users can experience a
  14. new standard of graphically realistic flight adventure from their desktops
  15. Microsoft New York and Microsoft Paris offer users the chance to experience
  16. graphically vivid and geographically correct simulations of these famous
  17. cities from above.  Microsoft Space Simulator provides users an entertaining
  18. and educational means for exploring the universe with their personal computers.

  20. Enhanced Flight Experience
  21.      "Our product announcements today illustrate Microsoft's long-term
  22. commitment to the entertainment category," said Susan Boeschen, vice
  23. president of the consumer division at Microsoft.  "Microsoft Flight Simulator
  24. is a proven success, and version 5.0 enhances this timeless classic and
  25. carries on the heritage of unmatched realism in PC flight simulation,
  26. offering users countless hours of fun and providing expert pilots challenging
  27. situations as well as great scenery and engaging entertainment value for all
  28. skill levels." 
  29.      Microsoft Flight Simulator 5.0 offers an all-around high-quality flight
  30. experience, from the richness of the realistic graphic scenery to the 
  31. authentic look and sound of the cockpit and dials on the control panel.  The
  32. flight environment and wide range of choices for flying activities have been
  33. expanded to include worldwide travel capabilities, with appropriate scenery
  34. and time-of-day changes as users wing their way over continents and oceans.
  35. Other new features include the following:

  37.    *  New latitude and longitude system that helps users locate destinations
  38.       and current location in flight
  39.    *  "Land Me" feature, which helps inexperienced pilots complete flights
  40.       successfully (without crashing) while observing the basics of landing
  41.       an aircraft
  42.    *  Realistic sound effects for instrument use, approaching objects and
  43.       crashes
  44.    *  Scenery that expands in detail as the aircraft approaches specific 
  45.       areas of interest
  46.    *  New weather system feature that gives users control over the weather 
  47.       they will encounter in flight

  49.       Users may choose to encounter other air traffic while in flight and be
  50. visited by the airport fuel truck upon landing after a long flight.  Night
  51. approaches are also realistic with runway lighting, building lights and stars
  52. illuminating the night sky.

  54. Flight Simulation Users Excited About New Version
  55.     Users of Microsoft Flight Simulator are anticipating version 5.0 as a
  56. completely new generation of flight experiences.  "Microwings members saw a
  57. technology demonstration of Microsoft Flight Simulator 5.0 several months ago
  58. but did not know it was the actual product.  The audience was transfixed by
  59. the vastly superior graphics and capabilities of the product on the screen,"
  60. said Robert MacKay, president of Microwings, Inc., an international
  61. association for aerospace simulation enthusiasts.  "Microsoft Flight 
  62. Simulator has always been respected as a great game, but version 5.0 goes 
  63. beyond existing gaming standards and we believe it looks as good or better 
  64. than the graphics you see in a $250,000 flight simulation machine.  Flight 
  65. Simulator 5.0 will make pilots take a second look at PC flight simulation; 
  66. `stunning' is the only word to describe this product."

  68. New Scenery Packs Available
  69.     Microsoft also announced today two new companion scenery packs for use 
  70. with Microsoft Flight Simulator 5.0.  Available later this summer, Microsoft 
  71. Paris and Microsoft New York offer vivid graphic realism to further enhance 
  72. the flight experience.  Pilots will be able to fly by the Eiffel tower while 
  73. visiting Paris and take an aerial tour of the Statue of Liberty in New York 
  74. Harbor on the opposite side of the Atlantic.  Used in conjunction with 
  75. Microsoft Flight Simulator 5.0, the scenery packs offer aviation enthusiasts 
  76. truly realistic geographic adventure using the personal computer.

  78. Space Simulator Previewed Today
  79.     Rounding out today's announcements was a sneak preview of Microsoft's 
  80. newest simulation product, Microsoft Space Simulator.  Users will be able to
  81. satisfy their desire to fly to other worlds and explore our galaxy with this 
  82. true-to-life tool for space exploration.
  83.     In order to achieve authentic space simulation, Microsoft consulted a 
  84. variety of sources in the development of Microsoft Space Simulator.  Making 
  85. use of published geological and astronomical documents and data gathered from 
  86. the Voyager, Magellan, Viking and Mariner space flights, Microsoft also 
  87. sought input from NASA.  The end result is an entertaining and educational 
  88. product with outstanding photo-realistic graphics, different ways to navigate 
  89. and experience space and a vast array of planets and other heavenly objects 
  90. to explore.
  91.     "This product has the ability to reawaken an interest in space 
  92. exploration.  While a large percentage of the Earth's population was not yet 
  93. alive during the first Apollo missions to the moon 25 years ago, the urge to 
  94. explore, to investigate and to understand is still strong within us all.
  95. Until Microsoft Space Simulator came along, there wasn't a way for the 
  96. majority of civilians to focus their quest," said Don Williams, former NASA 
  97. astronaut and crew member on two Space Shuttle missions.  "Space Simulator is 
  98. an extraordinary software product.  It offers everyone a chance to see the 
  99. Earth as it appears from space, to understand how spaceflight is achieved and 
  100. to experience the adventure of exploration - all this, and with amazingly 
  101. accurate details."

  104.      The announcement today of four products for simulation entertainment
  105. boldly underscores Microsoft's commitment to this category of the computer
  106. software industry.  The entertainment product unit at Microsoft is encouraged
  107. by the strong showing of Microsoft Flight Simulator in its successful 10
  108. years on the market.  Launching into the next 10 years with the new Microsoft
  109. New York and Microsoft Paris scenery packs and Microsoft Space Simulator, the
  110. company plans to keep challenging users and providing countless hours of
  111. exploration and flight simulation for many years to come.

  113. Availability, Pricing and System Requirements
  114.     Microsoft Flight Simulator 5.0 is scheduled to be available in August
  115. 1993.  The suggested retail price is $64.95.  System requirements include a
  116. personal computer using an 80386 or higher microprocessor, the MS-DOS*
  117. operating system version 3.2 or higher, minimum 530K free conventional memory
  118. and 1MB extended or expanded memory, one high-density disk drive, hard drive
  119. with 9MB free disk space, EGA video adapter with 256K display memory and
  120. compatible monitor or VGA or Super VGA.  System recommendations include 
  121. the Microsoft Mouse or compatible pointing device, sound board and Joystick 
  122. or flight yoke with 100 percent IBM-compatible game control adapter.

  124.     Microsoft New York and Microsoft Paris scenery packs are scheduled to be
  125. available in August 1993.  The packs will be sold separately for a suggested 
  126. retail price of $39.95.  Microsoft Flight Simulator 5.0 is required for using 
  127. the scenery packs.  Additional system requirements are the same as for 
  128. Microsoft Flight Simulator (see above).

  130.     Microsoft Space Simulator is scheduled to be available this winter for a 
  131. suggested retail price of $64.95.  System requirements include a personal 
  132. computer using an 80386/20 or higher microprocessor, MS-DOS* operating system 
  133. version 4.0 or higher, 550K free conventional memory and 256K configured as 
  134. available expanded memory, one high-density disk drive, hard drive with 9MB 
  135. free disk space, and VGA or Super VGA monitor.  System recommendations 
  136. include the Microsoft Mouse or compatible pointing device, sound board, 
  137. and Joystick or flight yoke with 100 percent IBM-compatible game control 
  138. adapter.
